Effective Technology Integration Into Lessons and Curriculum Reflection

I must admit that this course challenged me. There are several times where I get stuck in the rut of "this is math, we have standards to learn!" and "Projects! There's no time for projects!" But the truth is, there's always time to tie in the standards while still being effective and exploring topics at the same time. I had so much fun this semester thinking of everything I could do, and those deep essential questions I could explore with my students.

When I first started teaching, I taught language arts for several years... in fact, that was what I student taught. I used to love those deep conversations that you get to have with kids! However, after teaching math for the last 6-8 years, I miss out on those opportunities. We have great conversations about numbers, but it just isn't the same. I would love to implement my percents PBL into my teaching next year especially since it involves so many fractions!

One thing that I think I will struggle with and need to work on still will be how to implement my PBL without overwhelming myself or students. I think I will to really work on a plan before I jump in feet first!

This semester I also participated in another Twitter chat, to which I have to admit, I really am starting to enjoy. It's like you get to hang out with your colleagues and talk shop all in the comfort of your own home in your jammies!

    I think you have a really solid essential question for percents. The kids should have a good time figuring out the answer to that question! Update us to let us know how it goes.
    Also, I really like the way you break up your blog with photos!

    I can totally relate on going from teaching LA where you really get to know students and have a lot of conversations, to teaching Spanish where my students' language is limited in the target language. I think that PBL is going to be a great way for me to engage with students through different conversations!

    Jen,
    I love the idea of using Essential Questions in math! I think fractions and percents are the most difficult concept for students. Learning about both, in isolation make the concept even more abstract. By imbedding an Essential Question into your lessons, this take a concept out of isolation and makes it real. Let's be honest, as an adult, when was the last time someone gave you a worksheet to figure something out? It doesn't happen. We act as mathematicians all the live, long, day. Essential Questions show students that math matters and that they will in fact ,use the skills they learn in math in the real world.

    I think we all have those moments when we feel like we can't fit projects in because we're so worried about meeting standards. What I learned in this class is that if we set up these PBL experiences, the standards will be met more organically and the learning will be so much more authentic for our students! As a member of the math committee, this definitely got me thinking about incorporating more PBL into our units. This would be a great goal next year!

I remember the moment Kim Darche said: "in this class, you will use Twitter." I felt the heart palpitations begin, sweaty palms, blood pressure rising... and I don't understand why I felt that way. Genius Hour Post #3: What's your sentence?

Well, here's an update... I've changed my project. I began to prepare for my Genius Hour Project, Prenatal Diet and Excercise. I began by cleaning out my kitchen of all the food that was expired or high in sugar. I then went up to my room to organize all of my maternity clothes, work out clothes and exercise equipment. I was finding so much satisfaction in organizing my things and getting rid of things I no longer needed or wanted (or sparked joy if you will..) that I found my passion for these next several weeks will be simplifying and organizing my life.  Ever since becoming a mom, I have experienced some real anxiety.
