I remember the moment Kim Darche said: "in this class, you will use Twitter." I felt the heart palpitations begin, sweaty palms, blood pressure rising... and I don't understand why I felt that way. I've given Twitter two past attempts and I really just couldn't get it. I remember when Twitter became a thing right after I got out of college. It was just a stream of people's thoughts, and I recall thinking it was just one more social media app that I had to check, like a chore. Five years later, I gave it another try as an older, more professional adult. I still just couldn't get into it.
During this course, I decided I wanted to put all reservations aside and give Twitter one last attempt; I must admit, I don't entirely hate it. I still feel like it is just one more social media app to check, but I do see it's value. I still struggle with feeling like I'm getting only a preview and people's posts that leave me wanting more.
This course helped me to explore the world of education through Twitter. I started by adding teachers from across the district, state and nation. I found a lot of teachers who shared so many ideas and values that I shared that could make my job so much easier and efficient.
At the start, I found myself doing a lot of reading and not a whole ton of sharing. I'm still working on getting there and putting my work out there. Then came the week of the Twitter chat... This is what REALLY opened my eyes to Twitter. It was surprisingly fun... minus my son climbing on our dining room table to try and get to my laptop.
We all got a chance to talk, at once! I had so much fun seeing the variety of answers and even seeing my colleagues who shared my same values about education. Although I must admit, my favorite #twitterchatmoment was when Formative! replied to me! I definitely had a moment where I "geeked" out!
It was a sense of validation that what I do in my classroom is good and valued. It gave me a sense of confidence not only as a teacher but as a member of a digital community that I could share my ideas and that they had value. So I started sharing more and it felt good to give ideas that my colleagues liked and wanted to try.
I'm looking forward to one lovely Mrs. Kim Darche continuing to push Twitter onto us because I feel like I needed that push to put myself out there in the digital world. It helped me grow as an educator in ways that I thought I didn't know it could all by using Twitter... Who knew?!
